Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," said the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
