Trump Compels Thailand to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodia Truce with Trade Penalties
The United States has applied pressure on the Thai administration to reaffirm its dedication to a truce deal with the Cambodian side, warning that trade negotiations could be suspended as efforts are made to stop a Trump-mediated peace agreement from falling apart.
Rising Border Hostilities
In recent days, Thai officials declared it was putting on hold the truce agreement, accusing Cambodian forces of planting new explosives along the shared border, among them an incident that allegedly wounded a Thai soldier on patrol, who suffered a foot amputation in the explosion.
Following this, a fatality occurred and several others wounded by exchanges of fire along the Thai-Cambodia frontier, raising concerns of a fresh wave of retaliatory clashes.
US Trade Pressure
On Saturday, a representative from Thailand's foreign office informed reporters that a official communication from the Office of the US Trade Representative declaring the suspension of trade deal talks was received on Friday night.
The spokesperson referenced the document as stating that discussions on trade – which are focusing on a US tariff of 19% – could resume once Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out the joint ceasefire declaration.
“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” stated another government spokesperson.
President’s Economic Warning
Speaking to the press aboard the presidential plane as he flew to Florida on the end of the week, the US leader implied that he had used the “threat of tariffs” in discussions with the south-east Asian leaders.
He stated, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” adding, “they are performing well. I believe they will be okay.”
Ceasefire Agreement Background
The President witnessed the finalization of a ceasefire agreement, held in Malaysia this last autumn, and has touted it as one of several deals around the world he says should earn him the Nobel Peace prize.
The worst fighting in a decade between military forces of both nations erupted in mid-summer, with gunfire, artillery and airstrikes leaving dozens of people killed and 300,000 displaced.
Longstanding Border Dispute
Thailand and Cambodia have a historic territorial disagreement that originates from disagreements over colonial-era maps created by French cartographers. Ancient temples along the border are disputed by each nation.
