The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.
A recent term surfaced a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for doctors to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities rejects these allegations, just as it denies all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.
Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that initially championed harmony has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
