Rescued from Ukraine Lion Receives Critical Dental Operation
A Wildlife Rescue Center
An adolescent female lion saved from war-torn Ukraine has received vital oral operation to remove a badly decayed fang resulting from an abscess.
Lira was brought to a wildlife sanctuary in Smarden, Kent on March 14 after a campaign by managing director Cam Whitnall, who raised half a million pounds to fund her and four other rescued lions.

The procedure was performed on last week by veterinary dentist Peter Kertesz, who has cared for hundreds of large felines.
"Upon inspecting the lioness's oral cavity, I could see right away the damaged fang was highly inflamed," stated the dentist.
He thought the infection was due to a injury sustained more than a year ago, leading to bacteria producing harmful substances inside the tooth.
"My philosophy is animal oral health issues need to be treated in the most predictable, the most conservative and safest way," he explained.
Mr Kertesz clarified that as Lira did not need to catch prey, extraction was the most "sensible and ethical solution."
The Big Cat Sanctuary
The rescue center said the removed fang was 3.14 inches in length, with the dentist having to remove a accumulated infection from beneath the tooth and close the significant opening with seven dissolving sutures.
He additionally conducted a dental procedure on the corresponding top fang, which was discovered to have a similar issue.
The curator, curator at the facility, declared the procedure was a "total triumph."
She noted the team had observed "a minor swelling on Lira's jawline" but it had been impossible to assess "how serious the condition was."
"The lioness will be somewhat sore to begin with, but now that the infectious materials are out of her body, she will start to feel much better over the next few days," added the curator.
This vital operation represents a major milestone in the lioness's healing process after her rescue from Ukraine.
