A significant industrial zone located in the suburbs of Jakarta is addressing radioactive pollution after a government taskforce found traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing facilities within the area, which encompasses businesses that export frozen seafood.

Urgent Measures and Goods Withdrawal

The finding has triggered immediate cleanup operations and the relocation of local inhabitants, coming after a similar pollution alert in the US that was linked to the Jakarta plants.

A major multinational store chain is one of the companies that have recalled items from their stores following the discovery.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

Indonesian officials launched an investigation when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled coated shrimp sent by a local firm.

Officials released an warning instructing suppliers and retailers to discard the product and not sell it, although the found level was far below the agency's intervention limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an acute risk to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of worry following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (eg through eating of polluted products or water over a period) is an elevated chance of cancer, caused by damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Checks

Radiation tests revealed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing zone were affected. The official team did not name the 21 additional production sites, but said they would promptly undergo decontamination processes conducted by Indonesia's atomic energy authority.

A senior official stated that people residing in highly contaminated zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical authorities additionally conducted examinations on nearby employees and people located close to the industrial zone, finding nine individuals who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being allowed to go back.

Cleanup and Containment Measures

The affected sites will immediately receive decontamination operations by the national nuclear agency. Authorities have also selected the area of a recycled metal plant as an containment facility for polluted materials.

Indonesia, which operates no nuclear power plants or weapons programme, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas.

Source of Pollution and Import Restrictions

An official representative told reporters that scrap metal imports were the probable cause of pollution and announced the government would immediately impose limits on scrap metal imports. He said that vehicles were also being checked for potential contamination as they traveled through the region.

Regarding Caesium-137 and Health Concerns

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear element that usually appears in the environment as a consequence of atomic experiments or accidents, like Fukushima or Chernobyl. Small amounts are found in earth, products and air.

The level found in the frozen prawns was much less than FDA intervention limits, but the agency explained long-term contact to even small amounts of the element was linked to an higher chance of cancer.

Recall Details

The recalled seafood was sold at large store outlets across at least a dozen US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
