‘Online Monitoring’: Unilever Seeks to Capitalise On Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
Originally found over 150 years ago within a Pennsylvania drilling site, the simple jar of Vaseline may not seem like an natural focus for digital platform algorithms.
However, its rise as a viral TikTok topic has positioned it at the vanguard of an marketing transformation, in which large companies are investing heavily in content creators and reducing expenditure on promoting products in legacy broadcasters.
A Journey from Drilling to Digital
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by chemist Robert Cheeseborough, who noticed oil rig workers rubbing their skin with a residue from oil extraction. Currently, a wave of user-generated videos have chronicled its broad application in “life hacks”.
It has been touted as a remedy for cleaning shoes or prolonging the scent of perfume, along with a cure for squeaky doors. Users have even applied it to stop the scourge of crisp flavouring sticking to fingers.
Leveraging the Buzz
Detecting the product’s new life online, executives at the multinational enhanced the tricks by having their research teams evaluate the claims and letting the content creators in on the results.
Claims that Vaseline reduced the sting of chili on the mouth were confirmed. So too were ideas it could extend fragrance and restore leather handbags. Proposals that it might bleach teeth or extend lashes were debunked.
The ‘Digital Ear’ Approach
Billboards and TV ads would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. However, this online trend has persuaded leaders to turbocharge spending on content creators.
This tracking of digital spaces to shape commercial tactics has been labeled “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, newly named, has suggested it is aiming to spend a full fifty percent of its huge ad budget on digital creator content.
Shifting to Modern Engagement
A leading Unilever executive, who is leading the online push, said the company was simply adapting to new ways of connecting with customers. She said interacting online “without killing the party” was essential.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This remains our core objective as brands, back to when people were hanging out their laundry and sharing usage tips.
“We are witnessing a departure from a mass communication approach, where we would just send out ads … Now it’s many conversations, many communities. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these communities feel niche, yet they are vast.
“Having your brand advocated by other people, recommended by peers, that is how you can build trust and relevance. Creators are critical to that. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Fundamental Consumption Turn
This plan mirrors profound shifts taking place in media consumption, with Gen Z and millennial audiences allocating more attention to digital networks than legacy broadcast and print media.
This change is evidenced by declines in traditional media advertising. Across Britain, ad revenues for leading TV channels have declined by over six hundred million pounds in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
Additionally, it points to a merging of functions as brands effectively act as media producers, collaborating with a multitude of digital creators to promote their goods.
An industry expert from a leading agency said: “Obviously there’s a flow of audiences from conventional channels and they’re spending a lot more time on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are watching live TV or reading print.
“Numerous corporations inform us consumers have more faith in suggestions from the creators they engage with more than they trust ads. It's an ongoing shift.”
He noted companies can reduce costs by focusing on influencers over large-scale legacy ad buys, which also permits simpler message refinement to test effectiveness.
Such methods are increasing. Marketing investment on influencer marketing is rising at quadruple the rate than the media industry overall. Stateside, it has increased by over 100% since 2021 and is projected to reach substantial figures in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Regardless of the massive shift, executives said they believed TV advertising still had a prominent role to play, as broadcasters retained the power to frame public debate.
The executive noted: “One of the highest return-on-investment media opportunities is still events like the Super Bowl. The issue isn't broadcasters claiming: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ It’s about who’s capturing attention … There is undoubtedly a future for traditional media.”
