India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog After Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" level.
Record-Breaking Pollution Readings
Several parts of the capital registered an AQI above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy limit established by the WHO.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy limits.
Firecracker Prohibition and New Developments
Since 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that covers the city as colder weather begins.
Yet in recent months, the current regional government petitioned the highest court to request a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Judicial Verdict and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the capital registered contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Effects
The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also initiated a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to declining air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
The dangerously high levels of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating dangerous pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air sets in.
Health and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions results in high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing ten thousand premature mortalities annually in Delhi.
