Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
The economist stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the promise of the company, and eagerly await following their development".
Summers, who once presided over the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the AI firm said it understood the economist's choice to resign.
"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the Board," the company commented.
Congressional Action
This development arrives after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to pass a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the administration of President Trump for signature. He has stated he expects to endorse the measure, after changing his position on the matter following objections from his supporters.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-related emails made public by the Congressional committee days ago referenced multiple prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The messages showed that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to link the academic to notable global figures.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the public, Summers said he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild faith and fix bonds with the individuals nearest to me".
Professional History
The professor held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in Washington where Summers was a researcher, announced that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
Summers became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
