Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Rebuke
Personalities from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
This is a vile and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Party
A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his political party to defend the comments.
The Director's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
