Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on undesired offerings can be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures during her travels. The eclectic collection could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, together, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Holdings
These gifts are said to be stored in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust over a long period.
A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The question centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. By law, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
The collection includes:
- A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and making Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.
This charitable initiative highlights a distinct method to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
