The renowned Stahl house, a quintessential example of modernist architectural design, is now available for the very first time in its complete history.

This overhanging dwelling, situated in the Hollywood Hills, hit the listings this week. The price tag stands at a substantial $25 million.

The Stahl family, who have owned the property for its full 65-year timeline, released a announcement regarding their decision to sell. They noted that the house had grown increasingly challenging to maintain.

"This house has been the center of our lives for decades, but as we’ve gotten older, it has become more difficult to maintain it with the attention and effort it so truly merits," commented the offspring of the first owners.

They further stated that the period had emerged to find a new "guardian" for the house – "a person who not only values its design legacy but also grasps its role in the cultural fabric of LA and further afield."

Humble Beginnings

The inception of the Stahl house trace back to May 1954, when the original owners purchased a hilly parcel of land in the previously undeveloped Hollywood Hills area for $13,500.

Despite the Stahl house becoming a famous symbol of the city, the owners often pointed out that "no celebrities ever lived here," characterizing themselves as a "working-class family living in a architectural masterpiece."

Design Feat

The first design for the Stahl house was conceived during the summer months of 1956. However, many builders were at first hesitant to erect it on the challenging hillside.

In November 1957, the Stahls interviewed architect Pierre Koenig, who agreed to take on the challenge. With support from the prominent Case Study program, pioneered by a prominent magazine editor, the Stahls received support to hire Koenig.
