A Prediction Market User Made $436K from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However the odds had increased to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other individuals also profited significant sums from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.
Industry Context
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
