In late October 2024, the situation was completely separate. Before the American presidential vote, considerate Americans could recognize the country's serious imperfections – its unfairness and imbalance – but they still could identify it as America. A democratic nation. A country where the rule of law held significance. A nation headed by a honorable and ethical official, even with his elderly years and declining health.

Nowadays, as October 2025 ends, many of us barely recognize the country we inhabit. Persons alleged as illegal immigrants are collected and shoved into transport, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for an obscene ballroom. Donald Trump is persecuting his political rivals or perceived antagonists and insisting federal prosecutors transfer a huge total of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are being sent to US urban areas on false pretexts. The military command, rebranded the Department of War, has – in effect – rid itself of routine media oversight while it uses what could amount to nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, journalism organizations are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are treated like members of the royal family.

“The United States, just months before its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the brink into autocracy and totalitarianism,” an American historian, wrote recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”

One awakes amid recent atrocities. And it's challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost our nation is, and how quickly it has happened.

However, we understand that Trump was legitimately chosen. Even after his profoundly alarming previous administration and despite the alerts linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – following Trump himself stated openly he planned to act as an autocrat just on day one – a majority of citizens chose him rather than his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as the current reality may be, it's more frightening to understand that we are just several months under this leadership. Where will an additional three years of this decline find us? And if that period transforms into an prolonged era, since there is not anyone to limit this president from opting that another term is required, perhaps for security concerns?

Granted, there is still hope. We will have congressional elections in 2026 that could create a new political equilibrium, in case Democrats recapture either chamber of the legislature. We have public servants who are attempting to exert some accountability, like Democratic congressmen who are initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to cash appropriation from the justice department.

And a leadership election in 2028 could start the path toward restoration exactly as the previous vote placed us on this regrettable path.

There exist countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas across municipalities, like they performed in the past days at democracy demonstrations.

Robert Reich, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of America is rising”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in that decade or throughout the Vietnam war protests or in the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.

He claims he knows the signs of that revival and sees it happening now. For proof, he cites the recent massive protests, the broad, cross-party resistance to a personality's dismissal and the almost universal refusal by journalists to agree to the defense department’s demands they solely cover approved content.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists dormant until some venality grows too toxic, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, certain violence so disruptive, that the giant has no choice other than to stir.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I respect the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries persist: can America return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its position internationally and its devotion to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts tells me that the latter is accurate; that all may indeed be finished. My hopeful heart, though, convinces me that we must try, through all methods we can.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that’s about encouraging reporters to adhere, more completely, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it may be working on political races, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to safeguard ballot privileges.

Under twelve months back, we existed in a very different place. In the future? Or in several years? The truth is, we don’t know. All we can do is to attempt to persevere.
